Crazy Rich Asians

Just watched an advanced screening of Crazy Rich Asians and I’m pretty overwhelmed with emotion right now. Keeping it spoiler free because you gotta watch this film!

(Full disclaimer that I’m from a mostly ethnically Chinese family and grew up in Southeast Asia, so this film felt REALLY personal to me.)

It’s not just an incredible feeling to see an all-Asian cast in a big Hollywood film ($30 million budget, thank you WB) speaking English; that’s been talked about a lot and is, of course, very emotional to me, but there were also so many nuances within that.

Different accents: Singaporean, American, Malaysian, Australian, Cantonese, English, Mandarin, Hokkien, there was some French being spoken.

It was a cultural experience: there are different levels of Crazy Rich. Asian-Americans are different than rich mainland Asians are different than poor mainland Asians and so much more! You’ll learn about new cultures watching this! Take your kids!

FOOD. SO MUCH FOOD. IT ALL LOOKED SO AMAZING I WISHED I COULD EAT IT ALL.

Different types of Asian people with different types of personalities and archetypes! WHO KNEW

I laughed, I cried, I was touched (I know what my future wedding has to aspire to), Awkwafina is going to take over everything.

Do yourself a favor (and also me because the success of this film could potentially lead to more work for me down the line and obviously all status updates are just a chance for an actor to push their own agenda secretly and oh shoot I’ve said too much) and go watch this movie when it opens next week!

(The timing is also really important because Hollywood is all about the money and the first weekend and possibly the second is really important to show how financially successful a film is or not so please don’t dawdlllleeee okiloveyoubuhbye)
